This piece above evolved from a maple tree I carved into an abstract totem for the Arts Council of Wyoming County due to a grant that I received in 2021. As I was shaping the tree, I was intrigued by the inherent beauty resulting from a powerful lightning strike, and then removed it and saved it for a future sculptural piece. I determined it to be Fiddleback maple which had been spalted by the penetration of water as a result of the lightning strike. Hence, I call this sculpture Thunder.
